How to tell them apart in ten minutes
- Read the business licence scope. Ask for the 营业执照. Under 经营范围 (business scope) a manufacturer lists 摩托车生产 or 制造 (production / manufacturing). A trading company lists 销售, 贸易 or 进出口 (sales, trade, import-export). Many factories also hold an export company under the same group; that is normal, and they should say so.
- Ask for the VAT invoice type. A manufacturer issues a 增值税专用发票 for goods it produced; a trader issues one for goods it purchased. Either is fine. A supplier who cannot produce any invoice is neither.
- Request a dated floor video. Today’s date on paper, walk from the gate sign to the assembly line, your model on the line. A factory does this in an hour. A trader pretending to be a factory will send last year’s showreel.
- Check the address. Factories sit in industrial parks (in Chongqing: Banan, Jiulongpo, Bishan); traders sit in office towers. A Google Earth look at the address is free.
- Ask “who else do you build for?” Factories answer with brand names or OEM customers. Traders answer with the factories they buy from, if they are honest.
None of this makes traders bad. Most Chinese motorcycles reach small dealers through some form of trading company, including the export arms of the factories themselves. The problem is only the trader who claims to be the factory, because that lie usually travels with other lies. Our 12-point verification checklist covers the rest.
Honest pros and cons
| Factory direct | Good trading company | |
|---|---|---|
| Unit price | Lowest, at the factory’s MOQ (typically 20–30 units of one model) | 5–15% higher per unit; often equal or lower below the factory MOQ |
| Order shape | One model, one colour batch, one declaration | Mixed models from several plants in one container, from 3 units each |
| Documents | One set per factory; you consolidate if you buy from three | One invoice, one packing list, one bill of lading |
| Inspection | Factory’s own QC; you hire a third party or trust them | Independent PDI on every VIN, filmed, before crating |
| Parts | Factory parts only, at factory prices and MOQs | Matched kit across all models in the box, bought at wholesale |
| After-sales | Export department; response quality varies | One counterpart who has a reason to keep you |
| Communication | Often excellent for large customers, slow for small ones | Should be same-day; if it is not, change trader |
| Risk | Low fraud risk once verified; high “we won’t take your small order” risk | Fraud risk if unverified; low order-size risk |
When to go direct
When you sell 30 or more units of the same model per quarter, go to the factory. That is what factories are built for, the price will be better, and a good trading company will tell you so. Mixed containers are the on-ramp: test five segments with 3–10 units each, find what your market actually buys, then scale the winners direct. Several of the dealers we talk to run both: direct contracts with one factory for their volume model, a consolidator for everything else.
What a good trading company actually adds
- Consolidation. The factory wants 30 of one; the showroom wants 3 of five. Somebody has to sit in the production city, collect from several plants and load one box with one document set. How that works.
- Inspection with skin in the game. A trader who films every unit and puts the video in your hands before the container seals is taking on the claims it would otherwise hide from.
- Parts economics. Buying pads, filters, bearings and plastics at Chongqing wholesale for five models at once is a job no factory does for you.
- Local presence. Same-day plant visits, stock checks and problem-solving in Chinese, in person.
- One phone number after delivery. Claims, reorders and parts through one counterpart, not five export departments.
Our own position, stated plainly
Yangtze Moto Export is a trading company. We do not own a factory and we do not pretend to. We buy from Chongqing plants we have verified (licence, floor video, sample PDI) on a dealer’s behalf, consolidate mixed containers from 3 units per model, inspect every unit on video and load a matched parts kit. We earn either a 5–8% sourcing commission on the factory invoice or a 10–15% markup on vehicles and 25–40% on parts, disclosed on every quote. When your volume in one model reaches factory MOQ, we will introduce you to the plant and step back from that line. About us and how we earn.
FAQ
- How do I know if a Chinese supplier is a factory or a trading company?
- Ask for the business licence and read the scope: a manufacturer’s scope says 生产 (production) of motorcycles; a trader’s says 销售 / 进出口 (sales / import-export). Then ask for a live video walk from the gate sign to the assembly line. Both can be good suppliers; lying about which one they are is the disqualifier.
- Is it cheaper to buy directly from the factory?
- Per unit, yes, once you order the factory’s minimum, typically 20–30 units of one model. Below that, the factory either refuses or quotes a small-lot price that is no better than a consolidator’s, and you carry the inspection, documents and after-sales yourself.
- What does a trading company add?
- Consolidation of several factories into one container with one document set, pre-delivery inspection on every unit, a matched spare-parts kit bought at wholesale, one counterpart for warranty claims, and a local presence that can visit a plant the same day.
- Is Yangtze Moto Export a factory?
- No. We are an independent export and sourcing company in Chongqing. We buy from verified factories on a dealer’s behalf and disclose our margin: a 5–8% sourcing commission or a 10–15% markup on vehicles and 25–40% on parts.
