First 1,000 km

Break-in procedure

Three stages, one first service, and the reasons behind each rule — so your mechanic can explain them to the customer instead of reciting them.

The general rule for every four-stroke

  1. Stage 1 (0–300/500 km): keep rpm below roughly half of redline, vary the throttle constantly, avoid holding one speed on the highway, no full-throttle acceleration, no long idling. Load the engine gently in the mid-range — that is what seats the rings — then let it decelerate on a closed throttle.
  2. Stage 2 (to 800/1,000 km): raise the ceiling to roughly three-quarters of redline; short bursts of full throttle are fine, sustained top speed is not.
  3. Stage 3 (after 1,000 km): normal use. The engine keeps loosening up until 3,000 km; expect fuel economy and peak power to improve.
The 300–500 km first service is the most important service the bike will ever get. Oil and filter out (this removes assembly and bedding debris), valve clearance checked (clearances close as valves bed), chain adjusted, every critical bolt re-torqued. On commuters with screw-type adjusters this is a 40-minute job; on shim-type 450s and twins, budget 90 minutes.

Per-platform stages and first service

Platform-specific rpm ceilings, first-service items and intervals. Figures are typical for the class; the manual supplied with the unit prevails.

NC450-class 450cc single (enduro, rally, ADV)

  1. 0–300 km: keep below ≈ 5,000 rpm, vary the throttle constantly, no full-throttle runs, no sustained speed above 80 km/h. Avoid long idling.
  2. 300–800 km: gradually raise the ceiling to ≈ 7,000 rpm; short bursts of higher load are fine, sustained high rpm is not.
  3. 800–1,000 km: normal riding, still avoid holding maximum rpm for long stretches.
  4. First service at 300–500 km: change engine oil and filter (this is where the assembly debris comes out), check valve clearance, re-torque spokes, axle nuts, sprocket bolts and engine mounts, adjust chain, check coolant level and all fasteners on plastics and racks.
  5. Second service at 1,000 km: oil again, check valve clearance if it was not done at the first service, re-check chain and brakes.

500cc parallel-twin (street, naked, mini-ADV)

  1. 0–500 km: below ≈ 5,000 rpm, vary throttle, no sustained speed above 90 km/h.
  2. 500–1,000 km: raise to ≈ 7,000 rpm; brief higher loads acceptable.
  3. First service at 500–1,000 km: oil + filter, check valve clearance, chain, re-torque.

  2. 300–800 km up to 7,000 rpm.
  3. First oil at 300–500 km with filter/strainer clean; re-torque and adjust chain.

400cc adventure single

  1. 0–500 km below 5,000 rpm.
  2. 500–1,000 km up to 7,000 rpm.
  3. First service at 500–1,000 km.

650cc parallel-twin adventure tourer

  1. 0–500 km below 5,000 rpm.
  2. 500–1,000 km up to 7,000 rpm.
  3. First service 1,000 km.

CG / CB-type 150–200cc commuter & cargo

  1. 0–500 km below 5,000 rpm, no full throttle.
  2. 500–1,000 km up to 6,500 rpm.
  3. First service 300–500 km: oil, strainer clean, valve check (OHV adjusts in minutes), chain, re-torque.

Electric motorcycle & scooter (2–5 kW class)

  1. No mechanical break-in. Do a full charge before first use, then two or three cycles of 30–80% use, letting the BMS balance on a full charge overnight once per week.
  2. Bed brake pads gently for the first 100 km.
  3. First check at 500 km: spoke tension (hub motors are heavy), axle torque, brake lever free play, connector seating.

1000cc 4×4 UTV / side-by-side

  1. 0–10 hours / 300 km: vary throttle, avoid full-throttle, avoid towing.
  2. CVT belt break-in: 50 km of gentle on/off throttle so the belt beds to the sheaves — this alone prevents most early belt failures.
  3. First service at 10–20 hours / 500 km: engine oil + filter, diff oils, check CVT belt deflection and pulley faces, re-torque wheel nuts, A-arm bolts and skid plates, check CV boots.

300cc utility ATV

  1. 0–10 h: vary throttle, no towing, no full throttle.
  2. CVT belt: 30–50 km gentle bedding.
  3. First service 10–20 h: oil + filter, gearbox oils, belt check, re-torque wheel nuts and rack bolts.

ZXMOTO inline-three (820RR) & inline-four (500RR / 500F)

  1. 0–500 km: below 6,000 rpm, constantly varying, no wide-open throttle.
  2. 500–1,000 km: up to 8,000–9,000 rpm briefly.
  3. First service at 1,000 km: oil + filter, chain, re-torque, electronics check with the dealer tool if supplied.
  4. Track use only after the 1,000 km service.

What to tell the customer

  • Print the three stages on a card and zip-tie it to the handlebar at delivery — it is the cheapest warranty-claim prevention there is.
  • Book the first service at the sale, with a date. Bikes that come back for it have a fraction of the problems of those that do not.
  • Tell them what oil to buy if they service elsewhere: motorcycle oil with the JASO MA/MA2 mark. Car oil ruins wet clutches.

FAQ

Is break-in really necessary on a modern EFI engine?
Yes. Rings seat against the cylinder in the first few hundred kilometres, and the debris from that process is why the first oil change comes so early. Skipping it costs oil consumption and, on singles, cylinder scoring.
Can the customer do the break-in, or should the dealer?
Either, but the dealer must do the first service. Most warranty disputes on Chinese bikes trace back to a first service that was skipped or done with car oil. Sell the bike with the first service included and booked.
What oil for break-in?
The same motorcycle-grade mineral or semi-synthetic oil the platform specifies (JASO MA/MA2). Avoid full synthetic for the first 1,000 km on singles — rings seat faster on mineral oil.
Does break-in apply to electric bikes?
Not to the motor. But brake pads need bedding, spokes on heavy hub-motor wheels need re-tensioning at 500 km, and the battery should get three full cycles for the BMS to calibrate.
