Chinese motorcycle brands, tiered honestly

Who builds what, where, on whose engine, and whether a small dealer can actually buy it. 12 of the 24 brands here are from Chongqing; the rest are included because buyers compare against them.

Most “Chinese motorcycle brands list” pages rank brands by fame. That is useless to a dealer. What matters is three things: who makes the engine (the majors: Zongshen, Loncin, Lifan, plus CFMOTO and QJMotor outside Chongqing), whether the brand is locked by an exclusive distributor in your country (most majors and new-wave brands are), and which plants accept small mixed orders (tier-2, which is where consolidators like us buy). The table below is organised on those three questions. For the engines themselves see the engine database; for the city, the Chongqing cluster guide.

Questions dealers ask

Which Chinese motorcycle brands are most reliable?
Reliability tracks the engine maker and the plant more than the badge. Bikes built on Zongshen, Loncin or Lifan engines by an established plant, with EFI and a proper pre-delivery inspection, have a strong record in Latin America and Africa. New-wave brands (KOVE, ZXMOTO, CFMOTO) lead on performance and finish. The thinnest results come from unnamed export-only brands with no parts commitment.
Which brands are from Chongqing?
Zongshen, Loncin/VOGE, Lifan, Jialing, Jianshe, Shineray/SWM, Yinxiang, Hisun, KEWS, KOVE and ZXMOTO. CFMOTO (Hangzhou), QJMotor/Benelli (Wenling), Benda (Zhejiang), Zontes and Haojue (Jiangmen) are not.
Can I buy Zongshen or Loncin bikes directly?
Usually not in small quantities: the majors quote 20–30 units of one model and often have a national distributor in your country. Their engines inside tier-2 bikes are open, which is how we assemble 3-unit mixed containers.
What is the difference between a major, tier-2 and new-wave brand?
Majors make their own engines and export at scale through exclusive distributors. Tier-2 plants buy engines from the majors and build export-only or customer-branded bikes with flexible MOQ. New-wave brands are performance-led (KOVE, ZXMOTO, Benda) and distributor-locked but young.
