Chongqing: the motorcycle capital of China, explained for buyers

Where the Jialing meets the Yangtze, one city builds a third of China’s motorcycles and exports three-quarters of what it makes. This page collects the sourced numbers, the history, the map and the practical way a dealer uses the cluster.

Chinese customs statistics (our analysis)

From arms factories to the first civilian motorcycle

Chongqing’s two founding motorcycle names were both defence plants. Jialing traces itself to the Jiangnan Manufacturing Bureau of 1875, relocated to the Jialing River in 1938 and renamed the State-owned Jialing Machine Factory. Jianshe began in 1889 as a firearms works in Hanyang and moved to Chongqing in 1939. In 1979 Jialing bought three Honda PA50 mopeds, and with no blueprints twenty-odd technicians spent four and a half months hand-building the Jialing CJ50, modern China’s first civilian motorcycle. Jianshe started motorcycle production in 1980 and partnered with Yamaha in 1982.

The private-sector wave followed in the 1990s: Zongshen and Lifan in 1992, Loncin in 1993, Shineray in 1997. They started as engine and parts makers for the state plants, then built complete bikes, then became three of the largest engine suppliers in the world. Hisun, founded in 1988, took the same path in ATVs and UTVs.

The third wave is performance. KOVE (2017) finished Dakar and made Chinese 450 rally bikes credible; its founder Zhang Xue left to start ZXMOTO in 2024, which won the 2026 World Superbike title on an 818.8 cc inline-three. Local reporting in 2025 noted that mid- and large-displacement premium output grew 67% in a single year and exports above 800 cc grew more than fourfold.

Which district makes what

DistrictWhat you will find
BananBirthplace of the cluster and home of Zongshen. 59 motorcycle enterprises including 13 complete-vehicle makers and 46 parts suppliers: a full chain from R&D to after-sales.
JiulongpoLoncin and the Yamaha joint venture, plus Lifan’s historic base. Focus on larger displacement and leisure models and higher-standard core components.
Liangjiang New AreaThe new wave: ZXMOTO’s headquarters and the Chongqing International Expo Center where CIMAMotor is held every September.
Tongliang · Yongchuan · DazuWestern districts where electric motorcycle production has expanded fastest.
Bishan and the parts beltComponent makers that feed the assembly plants. Local reporting describes “four hours from parts to wheels” inside the cluster.

The practical consequence for a buyer: the factories behind most 250–800 cc Chinese bikes are within an hour of each other and of the airport. A consolidator can collect from three plants in one day and load one container the next.

Supply-chain depth is the real asset

The cluster counts more than 51 assembly plants of scale and over 410 component makers, with local parts content above 80% for petrol motorcycles. Three engine giants sit inside it: Zongshen (whose NC250 and NC450 singles power most Chinese enduro and rally bikes), Loncin (which builds BMW’s G310 single) and Lifan. That is why a tier-2 plant in Banan can build a competent 450 enduro with a proven engine: it is buying the same NC450 that everyone else uses, from ten kilometres away. Our engine database maps which engines sit under which bikes.

It is also why after-sales is easier than dealers fear. Parts for CG-type commuters, NC-series singles and the common 500 twins are commodity items in Chongqing’s wholesale market. We buy the spare-parts kit for every container there, at wholesale, and ship it in the same box.

How a dealer uses the cluster

  1. Choose by engine platform, then by plant. Decide whether you want an NC450, a 500 twin or a CG150 first; then choose among the plants that build on it. Our catalog is organised that way.
  2. Use the majors for reference, tier-2 for orders. Zongshen, Loncin and Lifan bikes are usually reserved for national distributors; their engines inside tier-2 bikes are open. Read the brand directory for who is locked where.
  3. Consolidate. A factory wants 30 of one model; a showroom wants 3 of five. Consolidation in the production city closes that gap with one set of documents. See mixed containers explained.
  4. Visit in September. CIMAMotor puts nearly every plant in one hall. We host dealers for factory visits during the show: details for 2026.
  5. Insist on PDI. Cluster depth lowers price; it does not guarantee assembly quality at every plant. A filmed 18-point inspection per VIN does. What we check.
Where we sit. Yangtze Moto Export is an independent export and sourcing company based inside the cluster. We are not a manufacturer. We buy from verified Chongqing plants on a dealer’s behalf, inspect every unit on video and ship mixed containers from 3 units per model. How we earn.

FAQ

Questions buyers ask about Chongqing

Why is Chongqing called the motorcycle capital of China?
Because it builds and exports more motorcycles than any other Chinese city: 7.857 million produced and 6.109 million exported in 2025, 35.5% of national output, with five of China’s ten largest motorcycle exporters based there. The cluster dates to 1979, when the Jialing arms factory hand-built the CJ50, modern China’s first civilian motorcycle.
Which motorcycle brands are from Chongqing?
Zongshen (Cyclone), Loncin (VOGE), Lifan, Jialing, Jianshe, Shineray (SWM), Yinxiang, Hisun, KEWS, KOVE and ZXMOTO, plus dozens of tier-2 OEM/ODM plants. CFMOTO, QJMotor/Benelli, Zontes and Haojue are not from Chongqing; they are in Zhejiang and Guangdong.
What engines does Chongqing make?
Zongshen, Loncin and Lifan are three of China’s largest engine makers. The Zongshen NC250/NC450 singles power most Chinese enduro and rally bikes, Loncin builds BMW’s G310 single, and Chongqing UTV engines sit under several North American brands.
Can a small dealer buy directly from Chongqing factories?
The majors quote 20–30 units of a single model. Tier-2 plants and consolidators accept 3–10 units per model mixed into one container, which is the route Yangtze Moto Export operates.
When is the Chongqing motorcycle show?
CIMAMotor, Asia’s largest motorcycle trade show, is held each September at the Chongqing International Expo Center. The 2026 edition runs September 19–22 with about 860 exhibitors.
How do I get from the airport to the factories?
Chongqing Jiangbei (CKG) is 30–60 minutes by car from Banan, Jiulongpo and Liangjiang. Most factories are within an hour of each other, which is what makes same-week factory visits and consolidation practical.
